Get Out: Orionid Meteor Shower Peaks Overnight

Tue Oct 20, 12:30 pm ET

The Orionid meteor shower is expected to put on a good show tonight into the predawn hours Wednesday, weather permitting.

This annual meteor shower is created when Earth passes through trails of comet debris left in space long ago by Halley’s Comet. The “shooting stars” develop when bits typically no larger than a pea , and mostly sand-grain-sized, vaporize in Earth’s upper atmosphere.

“Flakes of comet dust hitting the atmosphere should give us dozens of meteors per hour,” said Bill Cooke of NASA’s Meteoroid Environment Office.

People in cities and suburbs will see far fewer meteors, because all but the brightest of them will be overpowered by light pollution. The best view will be from rural areas (the moon will not be a factor, so dark skies will make for ideal viewing).

When and how to watch

The best time to watch will be between 1 a.m. and dawn local time Wednesday morning, regardless of your location. That’s when the patch of Earth you are standing on is barreling headlong into space on Earth’s orbital track, and meteors get scooped up like bugs on a windshield.

Peak activity, when Earth wades into the densest part of the debris, is expected around 6 a.m. ET (3 a.m. PT).

Some meteors could show up late tonight, too. Late-night viewing typically offers fewer meteors, however, because your patch of Earth is positioned akin to the back window of the speeding car.

The Orionids have been strong in recent years.

“Since 2006, the Orionids have been one of the best showers of the year, with counts of 60 or more meteors per hour,” Cooke said.

Some of those counts come in flurries, so skywatchers should find a comfortable spot with as wide a view of the sky as possible. Lie back and allow 15 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the darkness, then give the show at least a half hour to play out through spurts and lulls. Meteors could appear anywhere in the sky, though traced back they will appear to emanate from the constellation Orion.

Telescopes and binoculars are of no use, because meteors move too quickly. Extra warm clothing is a must, and a blanket and pillow or lounge chair allows comfortable positioning so you can look up for long stretches.

Reliable event

Predicting meteor showers is tricky because the debris comes from multiple streams.

Each time comet Halley passes around the sun on its elongated orbit – every 76 years – it lays down a fresh track of debris for Earth to plow through in subsequent years. Those tracks spread out and mingle over time, and we pass the tracks each October during our 365-day, nearly circular trek around the sun.

Japanese researchers Mikiya Sato and Jun-ichi Watanabe say activity in recent years is related to debris put in place from 1266 BC to 911 BC, and this could be another good year, according to NASA.

Even if that prediction does not hold, the Orionids will almost surely put on a decent show. Prior to 2006 and going back many years, the Orionids have produced a reliable 15 to 20 meteors per hour at the peak, for skywatchers with dark skies.

As a bonus, this time of year you can expect an additional five to 10 sporadic meteors per hour – those not related to the shower.

Foods That Burn Calories!

By Jennifer Nichol

Eat Foods High in Fiber

Celery and cabbage have long been touted as “calorie burning” foods, simply because the energy used to digest these foods is greater than the energy, or calories, ingested by eating the foods. An added benefit of these foods is that they are fibrous and filling, which means you will feel satisfied faster and on many fewer calories that other food choices. Keep in mind, however, that you don’t want your caloric intake to be too low to cause a drop in metabolism. When your metabolism drops, you will retain more weight as the body responds to what it thinks is a period of malnutrition.

Vitamin C is also believed to be a calorie burner and a weight loss booster. Foods that are high in Vitamin C and also high in fiber and low in calories include oranges, tangerines (fresh, not canned), grapefruit (which are 90 percent water!), limes and lemons.

Eat Low-Fat Dairy Products

Recent studies have been pointing to the fact that dieters who eat at least two to three servings of low-fat dairy products a day, like cottage cheese and yogurt, lose weight faster, keep it off longer, and lose more weight in the belly area than dieters who don’t include dairy products in their diets.

Easy lunch additions include single-serving sizes of low-fat string cheese, individually wrapped low-fat cheese wedges, milk cartons (not just for elementary school cafeterias anymore) and even fat-free sour cream in place of other condiments.

Choose Foods Rich in B12

Eggs, milk, low-fat cheese and cereals that have been vitamin-enriched are all good sources of vitamin B12. Some sources state that B12 increases the body’s fat-burning ability. Every gram of fat equals 9 calories, so when you burn fat, you burn calories, too. Vitamin B12 is also known to fight fatigue and speed up the metabolism, which are benefits that can give a boost to any dieter.

“Harry Potter” director says finale to be best yet

By Michelle Nichols

NEW YORK - The sixth “Harry Potter” film opens on Wednesday and is likely to be another hit for the boy wizard series, but with filming started on the finale, British director David Yates says “you haven’t seen anything yet.”

“Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” in which romance, magic and comedy collide as teenage hormones rage at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, has received rave reviews and already sold out hundreds of theaters for its opening day.

Based on author British author J.K. Rowling’s seven novels, which have sold more than 400 million copies, the film franchise has so far raked $4.5 billion worldwide for Warner Bros. studio, which is owned by Time Warner Inc.

The series finale is being split into two movies for which filming began five months ago and is due to finish in about a year. Part one of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” is due out in late 2010 and part two is planned for release in 2011.

“People are being very kind about what they’re seeing in ‘Half-Blood Prince’ and I just think you haven’t seen anything yet,” Yates, who directed “Harry Potter” five and six and is helming the final two, said in a recent interview.

” is like a road movie, refugees being chased by all these people who want to kill them. It’s quite intense,” he said. “Then the final film is like this big opera, big epic, it’s got more set pieces than any of the others.”

“It’s fights and dragons and battles,” he said. “It’s a real rollercoaster, but with a really oddly uplifting end.”

Website Rottentomatoes.com, which collates movies reviews, said 96 percent of critics liked “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.” Variety magazine said the movie is set to become “one of the year’s two or three top-earning films.”

ROWLING TO “POP IN” MORE OFTEN

The three key cast members who have played their characters throughout the series — Daniel Radcliffe — said they were excited about the final films.

“I feel like I’m on this totally different film,” Watson, 19, told a news conference. “All of us are now finished with school and we’re just totally focused on this finale.”

Radcliffe said he didn’t want to start contemplating the end of the film yet, which he likened to his “dream coming to an end,” while Tom Felton, who plays Potter enemy Draco Malfoy, said he would “cry my eyes out” when it’s finished.

Author Rowling has said she was devastated after finishing the final “Harry Potter” book, which was published in July 2007 by Scholastic Corp in the United States and Bloomsbury Publishing elsewhere in the world.

The books, which she spent 17 years working on, have made the mother-of-three one of the world’s wealthiest writers.

Rowling has also remained involved throughout the making of the films, reading scripts before shooting begins and offering suggestions, Yates said.

“She’s really gracious, she’s not territorial,” he said. “She kind of recognizes the challenges of adapting and she’s really sympathetic to that.”

“She said now that the shooting part is coming to an end she might just pop in more often, which we would love,” Yates said. “She was so busy with all the other books she couldn’t .”

Chris Columbus directed the first two “Harry Potter” films, Alfonso Cuaron took on the third and Mike Newell directed the fourth before Yates took control of the final four movies.

“I wake up in the morning I think Potter, I got to bed I think Potter. By the time I finish I probably will have spent seven years doing Potter,” Yates said.

“It’s a challenge to bring this huge thing to a conclusion and I couldn’t bear letting that go and seeing someone else doing it,” he said. “I couldn’t let it go, it was too addictive, too compulsive, too much fun.”

5 Neat and easy ways to burn calories all day, every day!

by Liz Vaccariello, Editor-in-Chief, PREVENTION, on Sat Jun 27, 2009 1:35pm PDT

You know that friend, the one who is always tapping her leg, getting up to straighten the bookshelf, the one who generally just can’t sit still? She’s likely burning an extra 200 to 300 calories a day on top of any workouts she does or the amount of calories she burns just being alive. This process is neatly called NEAT, which stands for “NonExercise Activity Thermogenesis” (say that 5 times fast!), and it’s essential for successful weight loss. Basically, it’s the extra stuff you do, physically, all day long that adds up. Make a point to add more “neat” into your day and you can zap another 500 calories! Here are a few ideas:

Do crunches in bed: You could burn about 20 calories in under 5 minutes just by drawing your knees to your chest 25 to 50 times, plus it strengthens your abs and gets your blood pumping.

Check out these 10 ways to boost your calorie burn

Dance around while getting dressed: Turn up the radio or listen to upbeat music on your iPod (if you can) while doing all your morning rituals—an hour of hip shakin’ can burn about 55 calories.

Stand up! Don’t sit when you can be on your feet—you’ll burn about 40% more calories. So just take a stand—when you’re on the phone, watching kids at the playground, making small talk at a party.

Laugh: Watch something that’s consistently funny (like 30 Rock) and you could burn about 40 calories if you guffaw for 10 to 15 minutes straight.

2 Minutes to a happier, healthier you!

Walk, pace, jog down the hall: In other words, MOVE! Doing little bits of activity all daytaking the stairs to use the restroom on another floor at work, doing an extra lap around the grocery storecan help you burn an additional 375 calories a day!
